Salwar Kameez: The Most Versatile Traditional Wear from India

Of all the ethnic styles of India, salwar kameez always stand out the best. Salwar kameez, also known as salwar suit, is clearly the most common and loved attire of India for its one of a kind charm. The salwar kameez traditionally is a long A-line shirt (kameez) worn with a loose pleated trouser (salwar) and stole called dupatta. While this is the basic silhouette of a salwar suit, styles vary from region to region.

Anarkali: Inspired by the courtesans’ of Mughal period, the anarkali is one classic pattern that has stood the test of time. Anarkali salwar suits consists of a kameez with a body fit bodice and paneled umbrella skirt from the waist down called kalis, which gives it a heavy voluminous flare. The kameez is paired with a churidar salwar which is a body hugging bottom with wrinkle extra length that accumulate at the ankle.

Patiala: Patiala salwar suits originate from Patiala region of Punjab, hence the name. The kameez of a designer Punjabi suit consists of a short kameez called kurti; heavily pleated salwar that provides it good volume and fall; and a dupatta. Even the brides of Punjab wear heavily embellished Punjabi suits in bright traditional colors like red, maroon and pink.

Straight Cut: The most common form of salwar suit is the straight cut kameez. A linear cut kurta is paired usually with churidar salwar, flared palazzos or straight cut trousers. This is a highly versatile pattern since it suits any body type and the various possible combinations make it a highly preferred style amongst women.

Contemporary Styles: Modern age styles in salwar kameez vary in their combinations. A standard kurti paired with a cigarette pant, dhoti or palazzo suits can create an easy out of the box look. Suits with high slits, gown style anarkalis, and draped saree inspired suits are just some of the ways you can wear a salwar suit and still carry your own style.
